Today I made my very first sheet of paper at the historic Magnani paper mill in
Pescia, Tuscany, under the expert guidance of a Master Papermaker.
A fascinating, hands-on experience — and great fun too! What struck me most is that
papermaking is one of the oldest and most successful forms of recycling: linen and
hemp rags and fibres are mixed with water, shaped into a sheet, pressed and dried,
giving discarded materials a whole new life. I left with a sheet of paper of my own
and an even greater appreciation for this remarkable craft.
